Glenn Hollis Gilbert Obituary - January 14, 1950 - September 9, 201
My dear husband, Glenn Hollis Gilbert , 65, of Donnelly, Idaho passed away on September 9, 2015 at home of natural causes.
There will be a memorial celebration of his life at the Church in Roseberry at 1 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 18th. Please bring a dish and/or drink and a story to share.
Glenn was born January 14, 1950 in Takoma Park, Maryland. He was a singular, one-of-a-kind individual whose main goal always was "to do right." He was a much loved husband, father and grandpa who never took his family for granted, but was thankful for them every day. He was a loyal friend.
As a husband, Glenn was a true romantic. He never brought me a bouquet of flowers or a box of candy, but he'd pluck a wild flower to show and made sure I knew he loved me every day by a look or a touch or by his simple attentiveness to me. His kindness was unexcelled. We remained sweethearts and actively "in love" for 42 years.
Glenn was a "news junkie", always looking behind the reported story for the "truth". He felt the pain of those mistreated and suffering, his heart never becoming hardened.
We met in the Fall of 1973 at the employee "chow hall" at the South rim of the Grand Canyon. We were married a month later, on October 10th, spent our wedding night hiking down the Bright Angel trail by the light of the full moon and we honeymooned at the bottom of the Canyon.
In 1975, our son Abe was born in Washington, D.C. and we soon after set up housekeeping on 20 acres in West Virginia, living in a 20 foot tipi that Glenn sewed on his mom's sewing machine. After a short return to Arizona, we continued on to McCall, just to see the beautiful mountains and many lakes that we'd seen pictures of.
While Glenn trapped and hunted the family lived in a sheepherder's tent on the South Fork. Going to the nearest town (Yellow Pine) for supplies was a 46 mile round-trip. Back in McCall, Glenn worked as a Cook, and he also worked for Brown and Son Construction. Glenn and I also did some video work.
In 1983, we moved to Donnelly, at which time he became serious about playing the guitar. I learned to play the bass and after awhile we began to book gigs. When our son was about 15 he joined us onstage on keyboard. We were known at that time as Hurricane. He also gigged with the band Cross Country, playing the bass, as well as with other bands. He produced an album of our original music, "Soggy Cookies" as Sir Real and LaWeeze.
Glenn was preceded in death by his parents Hollis and Sydney Gilbert, his sister Maureen Gilbert and his wonderful Grandma Pearl Gilbert; also by his great friends Steve Brown, Russell Watts, Jenoma Henry and Mike Smith. He'll be joining them and other friends lost along the way.
He leaves behind his wife Louise, his son Abe (Jennifer) and his grandsons Jonus and Liam.
Sleep my darling, and if the story is true, which I have the hope that it is, we will awaken together with glorified bodies in a world without pain and never again be parted.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the McCall Folklore Society, Box 2275, McCall ID 83638
